About
A Legacy of Kyoto Cuisine and Hospitality
Shimogamosaryo is a traditional Japanese restaurant located in Kyoto’s historic Shimogamo district, where nature and history have long intertwined alongside Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Founded in 1856, we have welcomed guests within a setting of traditional architecture and a tranquil garden, carrying forward the lineage of Kyoto cuisine. By listening to the rhythm of the seasons and engaging deeply witheach ingredient, we quietly express both time-honored techniques and contemporary sensibilities in everycourse.
Guided by the spirit of ichigo ichie, we treasure each encounter as a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and hope that the time spent here becomes a lasting memory.

At Shimogamosaryo, our cuisine is rooted in the philosophy of do-san do-ho—preparing local ingredients using culinary traditions born of the same land. By honoring Kyoto’s seasonal produce and presenting it through time-honored techniques, we have long shared the richness of this region’s food culture with generations of guests.
Today, while respecting these traditions, we continue to refine our craft with a sensitivity to the present, creating dishes that are both deeply rooted and quietly inspiring.

Kaiseki Cuisine
Shimogamosaryo’s Tea Kaiseki is a culinary tradition rooted in the spirit of the tea ceremony.
Shaped through the formal practice of chaji, it honors the philosophy of ichigo ichie— approaching each gesture and each flavor with care and intention.
Based on the structure of one soup and three dishes, we attend closely to seasonal ingredients, vessels, and presentation, offering a shared moment in time for host and guest, expressed through cuisine.

Experience Tea Kaiseki
Tea Kaiseki is the foundation of Kyoto cuisine, shaped by the spirit of hospitality found in the tea ceremony. Its essence lies not in formality, but in the seasons and the intention carried within each bowl and dish.
For over 170 years, Shimogamosaryo has preserved this philosophy in Kyoto’s Shimogamo district, offering a Tea Kaiseki experience that begins and ends with tea— a quiet moment where hospitality, beauty, and tradition come together.
